In his 1971 hit song “Imagine,” singer John Lennon envisioned a world with “no heaven,” “no hell” and “no religion.” At the time, sociologists predicted a steep decline in supernatural beliefs as the world became more educated and more scientific. These predictions were wrong: today, nine-in-ten Americans believe in the existence of a higher power, as do billions of people around the world.
“Does God exist?” is a question of profound philosophical consequence. It can sometimes seem like a difficult subject to broach. We invite you to consider some of the all-time classic arguments on both sides.
1. Is belief in God compatible with our modern understanding of science?
2. The PRO side uses the “fine-tuning” of the universe and the “intelligent design” of nature as evidence for the existence of a creator. How plausible do you find these arguments?
3. The CON side states that the existence of evil is incompatible with an all-loving and all-powerful God. What do you think a theist could say in response?
4. How does the existence or non-existence of God impact the way you live your life?
