Star Wars. Interstellar. The Martian. Humanity has long been obsessed with space travel and finding a home away from our home of the Earth. The ambition of colonizing other planets does seem incredibly interesting on paper and is surely entertaining to see play out on the big screen, but how seriously should we take this notion? Lately due to technology breakthroughs, the question has become less of an “If” and more of a “Should we?”
With many influential figures of today tackling this pertinent topic, it’s time to get up to speed! Should humanity colonizing space remain a fun sci-fi cliché or bloom into a potential reality? How beneficial would it actually be for our species?
Click the puzzle links above to solve the top arguments on both sides!
1. The PRO side argues that we need to colonize other planets in order for humanity to survive into the next century, given threats like pandemics, nuclear war, and even asteroids. How persuasive do you find this argument, and why?
2. The CON side focuses on solving the issues that humanity currently faces on Earth such as climate change, rather than resorting to space travel. Which option do you think is more realistic, and why?
3. Imagine that you were offered the opportunity to become one of the first 100 people to colonize Mars. Would you do it? Why or why not?
