The 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo are the first Olympic Games in which transgender athletes are competing. This has resulted in controversy as to the fairness and appropriateness of trans women competing against cisgendered women: do they have an unfair advantage, or can they engage in meaningful competition?
Examine the arguments and decide for yourself!
DEFINITIONS:
Trans woman: A woman who was assigned male at birth, but identifies as female.
Cisgendered woman: A woman who was assigned female at birth, and who identifies as female.
1) Is it fair for trans women to compete against cisgendered women? In general, how should the Olympics maintain meaningful and fair competition?
2) Would you want to see more conclusive evidence on the biological effects of transitioning before allowing trans women to compete against cisgendered women? If so, what would that evidence look like?
3) How do the rules that the Olympics follow regarding trans women affect society more broadly?
