Background

The 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo are the first Olympic Games in which transgender athletes are competing. This has resulted in controversy as to the fairness and appropriateness of trans women competing against cisgendered women: do they have an unfair advantage, or can they engage in meaningful competition?

DEFINITIONS: 
Trans woman: A woman who was assigned male at birth, but identifies as female.
Cisgendered woman: A woman who was assigned female at birth, and who identifies as female.
